Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași has decided that Alexandru Toader, a lecturer at the Faculty of Law, will no longer carry out teaching activities, regardless of how the measure of preventive detention develops. The announcement was made on Monday by Rector Liviu George Maha, after the lecturer was placed in preventive detention for 30 days in a case in which he is being investigated for rape, sexual assault, attempted sexual assault, and using his position for sexual purposes.
The decision was made by the leadership of the Faculty of Law, and Alexandru Toader’s courses were taken over by other professors. The measure of preventive detention has been challenged.
The Faculty also decided that Tudorel Toader, the lecturer’s father and one of his defense attorneys, as well as attorney Andreea Urdă, will no longer conduct activities with fourth-year students. The institution’s leadership cites the avoidance of contact with potential victims or witnesses. The two will continue their activities at the doctoral school and at the university’s extensions.
Seven former and current female students accuse Alexandru Toader of sexual abuse. The UAIC Ethics Commission, which initiated an investigation on its own initiative a year ago, has not yet finalized its report, but has forwarded documents to the criminal investigation authorities. The university maintains that it has zero tolerance for such situations and encourages the students who dropped out to return to their studies.
