Iași Bar Association criticizes the Law Faculty’s decision following the arrest of lecturer Alexandru Toader

The Iași Bar Association disapproves of the decision by the Faculty of Law of “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University to remove attorneys Tudorel Toader and Andreea Urda, who represent Alexandru Toader, from activities with fourth-year students. The measure was taken after the lecturer was placed in pretrial detention, facing investigation for rape, sexual assault, attempted sexual assault and using his position for sexual purposes.

In a statement, the Iași Bar Association argues that associating the practice of law with a situation of incompatibility could discourage attorneys from taking on difficult cases and undermine public confidence in the right to defense. The organization emphasizes that an attorney is not the same as the person represented, nor as the acts of which that person is accused.

The Faculty of Law’s administration justified the decision by the need to avoid contact with potential victims or witnesses and to protect teaching and assessment activities. Tudorel Toader and Andreea Urda will still be able to carry out activities at the doctoral school and at the university’s extensions.

Alexandru Toader was placed in pretrial detention for 30 days by a decision of the Iași Court of Appeal, which may be challenged. He benefits from the presumption of innocence.
