The Iași Court of Appeal is due to decide today, at 9:00 a.m., whether to issue a pre-trial detention warrant for Alexandru Toader, a lawyer and lecturer at the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași. The son of former Justice Minister Tudorel Toader spent the night in custody after being detained by prosecutors.
Alexandru Toader is being investigated for rape, sexual assault, attempted sexual assault and using his position for sexual purposes. According to the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Iași Court of Appeal, the alleged acts were committed against several female students, and the suspect allegedly took advantage of the authority granted by his teaching position and his position of superiority over them.
The proposal for pre-trial detention was submitted after his 24-hour detention and forwarded to the Iași Court of Appeal, the competent court also because he is a notary.
The case became public after, in November last year, two female students reported that passing exams had allegedly been conditioned on sexual services. The university said investigators had requested documents concerning his teaching activity, without providing details about the case.
Tudorel Toader claims that the case represents an “attack” against him and says the allegations are unfounded. The university rector said that, pending a possible court decision, the detention does not affect the lecturer’s teaching activity.
