“Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași is suspending the employment contract of Alexandru Toader, a lecturer at the Faculty of Law, after he was placed in preventive detention for 30 days. He is being investigated for rape, sexual assault, attempted sexual assault, and using his position for sexual purposes, in connection with two female students.
The university’s leadership announced that the suspension of the contract takes effect automatically following the court’s decision. The Faculty of Law Council was convened for Monday morning and is to establish the necessary measures to ensure that teaching activities continue without disruption.
The university states that it respects the presumption of innocence and will not comment on matters under criminal investigation. The institution asked students to report any potential violations of university ethics, including instances of sexual harassment.
Alexandru Toader was detained on Friday by prosecutors from the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Iași Court of Appeal, and on Saturday the court ordered his preventive detention. The investigation began in the autumn of last year, following an article published by Reporter de Iași.
