Three people were taken to hospital after a fire broke out in an apartment building in Mediaș

Three people were taken to hospital on Friday night into Saturday, after a fire broke out in a five-storey apartment building in Mediaș. The fire engulfed an apartment on the first floor, and smoke quickly spread through the stairwell.

When firefighters arrived, dozens of residents had managed to leave their homes on their own. Another 15 people were evacuated or assisted by rescuers in leaving the building safely.

The apartment’s owner, a 54-year-old man, his 32-year-old neighbour, and an 11-year-old girl suffered smoke inhalation. Medical crews provided them with first aid and transported them to hospital for treatment.

Another five people received medical attention at the scene after suffering panic attacks. At the end of the operation, firefighters determined that the fire had started from an unattended candle. The fire completely destroyed the affected apartment, and the authorities are to assess the damage.
