The Romanian Police has issued a warning regarding a new online fraud campaign, in which criminals use the identity of the Police and other public institutions to deceive citizens. Victims receive SMS messages or messages through messaging applications, claiming that they have a fine for exceeding the speed limit, with short deadlines for payment and threats of penalties.
The IGPR emphasizes that these messages are part of a 'Government Impersonation Scam', aimed at obtaining financial benefits or sensitive data. The Police recommends not responding to messages or accessing suspicious links, verifying payment obligations through official platforms, and avoiding entering personal data on unofficial websites. If someone has already provided banking information, it is recommended to immediately contact the bank and report the fraud to the competent authorities.
