The Romanian Parliament has taken a first step towards saving the Azomureș plant by approving a law that declares the production and distribution of chemical fertilizers a critical national infrastructure.
This measure, which is set to be voted on by the Chamber of Deputies as well, could provide direct support to the sector, which is struggling due to layoffs and uncertainties regarding the future. The plant, part of the Swiss group Ameropa, has initiated collective dismissal procedures in the context of reduced domestic production and dependence on imports. The initiators of the law emphasize the importance of the fertilizer sector for national food security and propose its inclusion in a state aid scheme. This could help stabilize production and reduce dependence on imports, encouraging farmers to buy local products. Additionally, recognizing these activities as critical infrastructure would allow for the development of national protection and operational continuity plans.
The Azomureș plant, which has over 1,000 employees, continues discussions with authorities and Romgaz to find viable solutions for maintaining industrial capacity.
