An investigation conducted by RISE Project revealed that the North Korean regime has implemented a real estate scheme in Bucharest, renting a protocol building from the embassy's courtyard to the Romanian company IMA Partners SRL. This company obtained an exclusive contract in 2011, paying 10,000 euros monthly, an amount that includes rent for the building and land. The company's administrator, Marius Iliev, sublet the apartments, becoming an intermediary between the North Korean regime and tenants. Although he has not paid rent for 7-8 years due to sanctions, Iliev continues to use the property to recover investments in renovations. The North Korean embassy and the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not respond to inquiries regarding this contract and the renovations carried out.
