The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Ţoiu, announced that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will declassify over 5,000 diplomatic files from the early years of transition, covering the period 1990-1992. These documents, which include information about the May 1990 elections, miners' protests, the visit of King Michael, and correspondence with the USSR, will be made available to the public, aiming to provide a clear picture of Romania's recent history. Oana Ţoiu emphasized that Romanians have the right to know the truth about the transition, considering that many pieces of information have been kept secret for over 30 years.
The project aims to declassify documents classified at the level of 'service secret', which have not been considered 'state secrets' for more than a decade. In total, 5,376 files will be declassified, stored in 768 archive folders, representing the largest tranche of diplomatic documents declassified since 1989. Among the titles of the documents are relevant themes for Romania's recent history, such as the USSR's reactions to the 1989 Revolution and the reunification of Germany.
