The mercenary Horaţiu Potra, along with his son Dorian and his nephew Alexandru, remain in preventive detention after the Bucharest Court of Appeal rejected their requests for release from custody. Horaţiu Potra was arrested on November 21 for attempting to commit actions against the constitutional order and for violating the arms regime. He was brought back to the country from Dubai, where he was captured in September, and he accepted rapid repatriation due to the lack of an extradition agreement with the United Arab Emirates.
Potra is accused, along with 21 other defendants, including former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu, of planning violent actions aimed at destabilizing Romania, in the context of the annulment of the 2024 presidential elections. Investigators claim that Potra coordinated a paramilitary group and discussed with Georgescu a plan for subversive actions, which included violent protests. Following the searches, weapons and explosive materials were found, leading prosecutors to conclude that their actions posed a threat to national security and the constitutional order.
