The Chamber of Deputies has adopted a legislative package for the protection of victims of domestic violence, which includes essential measures such as the automatic extension of the protection order.

The Chamber of Deputies adopted, with 284 votes 'in favor', a legislative package that amends Law no. 217/2003 and the Penal Code, aimed at protecting victims of domestic violence. The project allows several institutions, such as prosecutors and local authorities, to file protection order requests on behalf of victims. The provisional protection order will be automatically extended until the request is resolved in the first instance, ensuring continuity of protection.

Additionally, the courts will assess risks even without the probation service report, and victims will no longer be pressured to withdraw their protection requests. Another important amendment prohibits the withdrawal of criminal complaints in cases of domestic violence, treating violence as a public safety issue. Alina Gorghiu, the chair of the special committee, emphasized the importance of these measures for the safety of victims.
