The Polish Parliament adopted a law on Friday that allows the registration of civil partnerships, part of the reforms promised by the center-left coalition led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk. According to the new legislation, two adults can enter into a civil partnership in front of a lawyer and, after registration, can establish arrangements regarding properties and maintenance obligations.
Additionally, partners have the right to live together, access each other's medical information, and act as legal representatives. However, conservative President Karol Nawrocki, from the Law and Justice Party (PiS), stated that he will not promulgate the law, emphasizing that marriage is defined in the Constitution as a union between a man and a woman. The Minister of the Interior also informed civil registry offices that they must recognize marriages between persons of the same sex, according to a decision by the Court of Justice of the European Union.
