The body of George Smyth, an 18-year-old British student at the University of Bristol, was discovered in the Bucegi Mountains by two shepherds, Sorin and Sorinel, after nearly a year of searches. The young man disappeared in November 2025 during a hike, and Romanian authorities conducted complex search operations, including helicopters and thermal imaging drones, but without success. On the night of his disappearance, George called for help from the mountain rescuers, but the initial searches yielded no results.

Rescue teams found an abandoned backpack, suggesting that the young man may have discarded it due to exhaustion. Despite considerable efforts, his remains were only identified now, in the Valea Gaura area. Meteorologist Radu Manta announced the discovery on social media, thanking the shepherds for their contribution. This tragedy highlights the risks of mountain hiking and the importance of proper preparation.
