Romania will introduce a new signature on banknotes starting in 2026, marking the first change in the last 25 years. Mugur Tolici, a veteran of the National Bank of Romania (BNR), will take over the position of director of the Issuance, Treasury and Cashier Directorate (DETC) from Ion Nițu, who has led this directorate since 1999. The new banknotes will circulate alongside the existing ones.
Cristian Popa, the president of the Numismatic Commission, emphasized the importance of this change and mentioned that Mugur Tolici is an experienced and proactive manager. Additionally, BNR has resumed the issuance of collector sheets and launched its first colored coin in its history, involving collectors in the issuance decisions. The change of signature is considered an important step in the evolution of Romanian numismatics.
