BNR launches a commemorative banknote dedicated to Eugeniu Carada

The National Bank of Romania will launch, starting September 14, 2026, a commemorative banknote for collectors dedicated to Eugeniu Carada, the founder of the NBR, marking 190 years since his birth. The banknote will go on sale on September 15 through the NBR’s regional branches in Bucharest, Cluj, Constanța, Dolj, Iași and Timiș.
The banknote has a face value of 100 lei, the same dimensions as the circulating banknote of the same denomination, and is printed on polymer substrate, predominantly in blue. Its design includes a portrait and the signature of Eugeniu Carada, an image of the Teller Hall in the NBR’s Old Palace, Romania’s coat of arms and security features, including a complex transparent window.
The NBR will issue 16,000 commemorative banknotes and 1,000 special sheets, each containing four banknotes. An individual banknote costs 240 lei, while the special sheet, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, costs 840 lei; these prices include VAT. The banknotes are legal tender in Romania’s territory.
