Mugur Isărescu: The NBR Is Ready to Print Euro Banknotes

The National Bank of Romania’s Printing House is ready to print euro banknotes when Romania fulfills the necessary conditions, BNR Governor Mugur Isărescu stated at the launch of a new numismatic issue.

Isărescu presented the commemorative banknote dedicated to Eugeniu Carada, the founder of the BNR, on the 190th anniversary of his birth. The banknote has a face value of 100 lei, is printed on a polymer substrate, and includes a state-of-the-art security feature called OVMI Spark. The optically variable and magnetic ink changes color from gold to green, depending on the viewing angle.

The new banknote has dimensions similar to those of the 100-lei banknote currently in circulation and contains a complex transparent window, a portrait of Eugeniu Carada, and images of the BNR’s Old Palace. The banknotes are legal tender in Romania.

The issue consists of 16,000 pieces, while another 1,000 special sheets contain four banknotes each. The prices are 240 lei for a banknote and 840 lei for a special sheet.

Sales begin on September 15, 2026, through the BNR’s regional branches.
