Landscape architect: About the fallen trees in Bucharest due to the storm / "The main reason why so many fall is their inadequate management"

The storm that hit Bucharest on the night from Tuesday to Wednesday caused the fall of approximately 1,000 trees, according to ISUBIF. Diana Culescu, vice president of the Association of Landscape Architects in Romania, states that the large number of fallen trees is the result of inadequate management, not just extreme weather conditions.

Of the 1,408 reported interventions, 450 vehicles and 66 buildings were affected. Diana Culescu emphasizes that trees are living beings that give way under extreme conditions, but many of them were already dry or neglected. Repeated pruning and underground works have affected the root system, and the trees had nowhere to grow.

Although there are tools for assessing the condition of trees, they are not used properly. Culescu proposes the implementation of a Green Register to track the history of trees and the interventions made on them, emphasizing that dry trees pose a greater danger than green ones.

The pressure for change could come from insurance companies as extreme weather phenomena become more frequent, she stated.
