A protest themed “Stop extremism and violence! Democratic Romania” will take place on Sunday, September 20, in the central area of Victoriei Square, between 17:30 and 22:00. The demonstration has been declared and authorized, and the authorities are announcing special public order measures following the violent incidents that recently occurred in the same area.
Participants are expected between 17:30 and 18:00, with the speeches and protest scheduled to take place between 18:00 and 21:30. Departure is scheduled for the 21:30–22:00 interval. The Bucharest Gendarmerie and the other responsible institutions will ensure the protection of participants and will organize checkpoints along access routes. People carrying bulky luggage may be asked to identify themselves and searched.
Dialogue teams from the Gendarmerie will be present in Victoriei Square, identifiable by their blue vests. Participants are urged to avoid conflicts and notify law enforcement in the event of aggressive or provocative behavior. Weapons, explosive and incendiary materials, tear-irritant substances, electroshock devices, and other objects that could be used for violence are prohibited.
Organizing or participating in a counter-demonstration held simultaneously and in the same place as another public assembly may be punishable by a fine of between 500 and 5,000 lei. Depending on the number of participants, traffic in the area may be restricted or diverted.
The protest is taking place five days after the violence at the shepherds’ demonstration, when several people forced through the security cordon and threw objects at gendarmes. Following the intervention, 47 people were taken to the Police, three criminal cases were opened, and 24 sanctions were imposed, totaling 46,000 lei.
