Anti-extremism demonstration following the farmers’ protest: “Stop extremism and violence! A democratic Romania”

Dozens of people took part on Sunday evening in the demonstration “Using Violence as a Political Weapon Is No Longer Protest,” organized to send a message against extremism and political violence. Participants called on authorities to stop the spread of extremist messages online and take action against those who resort to violence.

The demonstrators said that “violence is not an opinion” and called for all those who allegedly acted violently at the farmers’ protest to be identified and brought to justice.

The action comes amid tensions generated by the farmers’ protest and concerns about public demonstrations becoming platforms for extremist messages. The organizers and participants said that expressing grievances cannot justify assaults or incitement to violence.

They are calling on authorities to examine both the acts committed during the protest and the messages subsequently shared online, in order to establish responsibility and enforce the law. The demonstrators stressed that the institutional response must be firm, through investigations and judicial measures against those responsible.
