The Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) announced that there is no need to raise the terrorist alert level in Romania, which remains at the blue-precaution level, following the CSAT decision to accept the US request to host "non-kinetic equipment" at two air bases.
After the CSAT meeting, in which the request from the United States to deploy aircraft at the Kogălniceanu base and at Câmpia Turzii was approved, the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) communicated that there is no need to raise the terrorist alert level in Romania.
This remains at the blue-precaution level, which indicates a possibility of a terrorist attack, but not imminent. SRI emphasizes that it constantly monitors the security situation and collaborates with international partners to prevent any threat. The National Terrorist Alert System (SNAT) in Romania has four alert levels, and currently, the blue level is maintained, which has been established for several years.
In contrast, in recent days, Europol warned of a heightened threat of terrorism in Europe, especially in the context of tensions in Iran, where leaders have called for a holy war against the United States and Israel. This situation has generated a state of maximum alert in Europe, with increased risks of cyberattacks and disinformation.
Nicușor Dan, explanations regarding the CSAT decision
The President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, provided additional explanations on Wednesday afternoon after the decision of the Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT) to allow the hosting of "non-kinetic" American equipment on Romanian territory, amid the war in Iran. He emphasized that "we are talking about a collaboration similar to that which many other NATO states already have with the US these days."
"All this equipment is defensive and is not equipped with actual weaponry! For this equipment and military forces to arrive in Romania, the approval of the Legislature is needed. In this regard, I have sent a letter to Parliament and, as long as there is a favorable vote, they will be deployed based on the partnership agreement between Romania and the US. Therefore, we are talking about a collaboration similar to that which many other NATO states already have with the US these days. Romania remains a safe country and there are no reasons for concern. Moreover, this equipment enhances the security of Romania, which thus becomes even better protected," wrote the President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, on his Facebook page.
Nicușor Dan previously assured in a press conference that the equipment is defensive and does not pose a threat, emphasizing that Romania remains a safe country. According to him, refueling aircraft, monitoring equipment, and satellite communications are expected to be deployed at the bases in Romania.
