The President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, chaired on Monday, June 29, at the Cotroceni Palace, a meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT), focused on analyzing Romania's objectives for the NATO Summit on July 7-8, 2026, in Ankara. The main topics discussed included strengthening Romania's role as a reliable ally in NATO, progress in fulfilling financial commitments, and support for Ukraine. CSAT approved the participation of 5,358 Romanian military and civilian personnel in external missions in 2027, including an additional contribution to the MCM BLACK SEA initiative for the security of the Black Sea.

During the meeting, the situation of ROMATSA was also analyzed, in the context in which the Bucharest Court of Appeal decided, in February 2026, to suspend for 30 days the certificate under which the company is a provider of air navigation services, following a lawsuit filed by 12 air traffic controllers who accuse discrimination in hiring. The decision is not final and is not enforceable.

According to the Presidential Administration, a potential suspension of ROMATSA's activity would generate a major systemic vulnerability to national security, affecting airspace supervision and NATO missions on the Eastern Flank. It could also lead to the rerouting of European air corridors and impact commercial, cargo, and emergency transport, with significant economic impact. CSAT decided that the Government should identify solutions to ensure the continuity of air navigation services.
