Sorin Oprescu, former mayor of the Capital, was apprehended on October 4 near the airport in Thessaloniki, Greece, after fleeing the country three years ago. Sentenced in absentia to 10 years and 8 months in prison for corruption, he cited his precarious health condition and the conditions in Romanian prisons. The Greek courts decided not to arrest him but to place him under judicial control, requiring him to report to the police three times a month and prohibiting him from leaving Greece.

Additionally, Oprescu must pay a bail of 5,000 euros, and his trial in Greece will begin within a maximum of 40 days. The decision of the EU Court of Justice regarding the execution of European arrest warrants complicates the situation, but each case is analyzed individually, leaving room for possible exceptions.
