A 44-year-old Romanian citizen was arrested on Saturday in the town of Ouranoupoli, Greece, on the basis of a European arrest warrant issued by Romania for traffic offenses. The man, dressed in clerical clothing, was reportedly heading toward the monastic community on Mount Athos.
According to the documents sent to the Greek authorities, the Romanian was sentenced to one year, five months and 20 days in prison. He was detained for driving without a license in two cases: in Constanța, in 2023, and in Vaslui, in 2025.
Greek police identified and detained him on Saturday, and on Monday he was brought before a prosecutor in Thessaloniki. Although he remains in custody, the Greek authorities have requested further clarification regarding the offenses for which he was convicted in Romania.
The information was reported by the Greek news agency ANA. After receiving the clarifications, the authorities will decide whether the case will be referred to the competent appeals chamber, which will examine the extradition procedure based on the European arrest warrant issued by Romania.
