A 40-year-old Romanian man was detained in Italy after allegedly leaving on foot the scene of a road accident that killed a young woman and seriously injured a teenager. The accident occurred on Friday evening in Roncello, in the province of Monza e della Brianza.
According to Il Giorno, the man, who lives in Bellusco and was already known to authorities, later went to a Carabinieri barracks in Vimercate. He is being investigated for vehicular manslaughter, aggravated by fleeing the scene of the accident, as well as for causing extremely serious bodily injury.
The victim, 18-year-old Carola Battaglia, was in a Fiat 500 with a 16-year-old friend. The car collided head-on with an Audi. The young woman was taken to the hospital in Vimercate but died shortly after being admitted. The seriously injured teenager was taken to Niguarda Hospital in Milan.
The Audi’s owner was also in the vehicle, but he was not driving. Witness statements and investigators’ checks led to the identification of the driver, who allegedly fled immediately after the collision. The man was tested for alcohol and drugs and imprisoned in Monza, at the disposal of the judicial authorities.
