At the meeting of the Council of Environment Ministers in Brussels, the Minister of Environment, Waters and Forests, Diana Buzoianu, stated that Romania is committed to the green transition, but emphasizes the need for real instruments and not just promises on paper. Romania has obtained flexibilities and realistic deadlines for implementing decarbonization measures, considering the economic differences between member states. An ambitious target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040 has been set, with 5% of this target potentially achievable through international credits. Buzoianu highlighted Romania's active role in negotiations, stressing the importance of a just transition, with targeted support and equitable access to financing. Additionally, an extra year has been obtained for the implementation of the emissions trading scheme in transport and construction, essential to avoid price increases. Romania will participate in COP30 in 2025, in Belem, Brazil.
