The Minister of the Environment, Diana Buzoianu, criticized the Ministry of Transport for the unfinished works at the Bala dam, essential for long-term water management:

“What we see now on the Danube is the failure of the last 2-3 years at the Ministry of Transport. An essential work has not been done, which should have solved the problem in the long term.”

Buzoianu emphasized that the project already had approvals and funding approved from 2024, but it was not implemented, which led to the current crisis.

The emergency measures adopted by the National Administration "Apele Române" managed to delay the shutdown of the Cernavodă power plant by about seven days, but temporary solutions do not solve the long-term problem.

“We managed, with a fraction of the cost that the shutdown of the Cernavodă Power Plant would have entailed last Thursday, to gain seven days. This can be done in a crisis situation for which the necessary preparations have not been made in recent years,” said Buzoianu.

Buzoianu highlighted the need for dredging works and criticized the delay of essential infrastructure projects, mentioning that Romania has not allocated sufficient funds for flood protection in recent decades.

She also emphasized the importance of managing water resources and integrating environmental measures with economic investments, warning that Romania will acutely feel the effects of climate change.
