According to an analysis published by the Intelligent Energy Association (AEI), Romania ranks first in the European Union regarding the real burden of electricity prices. Although the nominal price of electricity is 21% below the EU average, when adjusted for purchasing power (PPP), it becomes 15% higher. The president of AEI, Dumitru Chisăliță, explains that the low nominal prices do not reflect the economic reality of Romanians, who face reduced purchasing power.

Romania has high distribution and transport costs, and the structure of the energy market, influenced by regional volatility, contributes to higher prices. Distribution and transport tariffs, when reported to purchasing power, place Romania first in the EU. Chisăliță suggests that tariffs could be reduced by increasing the efficiency of networks and the volume of energy transited. He also emphasizes the need for a targeted fiscal policy to reduce energy taxes, which could lessen the financial burden on consumers.
