The Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests, through Minister Diana Buzoianu, has announced the amendment of Emergency Ordinance no. 57/2007 to clarify the status of geoparks, eliminating legislative confusions that have blocked local initiatives. This regulation responds to the proposals of the National Commission for UNESCO and the National Forum of Geoparks, which have identified issues related to erroneous interpretations regarding land use restrictions.

Geoparks are now defined according to UNESCO standards as territories that capitalize on geological, natural, and cultural heritage, supporting the sustainable development of local communities. The UNESCO geopark status is temporary, with rigorous evaluations every 4 years, ensuring high management standards. The new ordinance facilitates the designation of new geoparks in Romania, contributing to local economic development and promoting heritage at the international level.
