Romania and Serbia sign a memorandum for the hydropower project Iron Gates III

Romania and Serbia have advanced in energy cooperation by signing a memorandum for the Djerdap 3 hydropower project (Iron Gates 3).

Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan emphasized the importance of assessing the environmental impact, navigation, and the operation of existing hydropower plants. The memorandum facilitates the exchange of information regarding the benefits and impact of the future power plant. He also highlighted that the investment, currently in the analysis stage, could contribute to energy storage and the stabilization of the energy system.

Ilie Bolojan highlighted the role of pumped storage plants in energy storage and grid stability. He stated that Romania will analyze the project "seriously," ensuring that its development is compatible with existing hydropower plants and protects the riparian areas.

At the signing ceremony held on Thursday, Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Đedović Handanović, recalled the long-standing partnership between Romania and Serbia, which began in the 1960s with agreements on the construction and operation of the Iron Gates hydropower system.
