Following the devastating floods in September 2024, which affected 28 localities in Galați County, the European Commission is providing technical support for the first time to a county project in Romania aimed at reducing flood risk.

These floods resulted in seven deaths and severely impacted approximately 7,000 households, as well as road and agricultural infrastructure. The project, funded through the Southeast Regional Program 2021–2027, aims to transform Galați County into a model for adapting to climate change, benefiting from technical assistance from the European Commission. The most affected localities, such as Pechea and Valea Mărului, will receive priority measures. The focus will be on developing green infrastructure, with natural solutions for protecting the environment and communities, including restoring the natural space of watercourses and planting for soil stabilization.
