OMV Petrom, a Romanian oil and gas company, has announced that it is joining the consortium exploring the offshore Khan Tervel perimeter in the Bulgarian sector of the Black Sea, thus expanding its presence in a crucial area for Europe's energy security.

The agreement stipulates that OMV Petrom will hold 25% of the project, subject to approval by the Bulgarian authorities. Shell will remain the operator with 42%, while Turkish Petroleum Overseas Company Limited will hold 33%. The Khan Tervel perimeter, covering an area of 4,000 km², was licensed for exploration in 2025. The CEO of OMV Petrom, Christina Verchere, emphasized the importance of this participation for strengthening the company's portfolio. The project will involve collecting 3D seismic data, essential for future drilling operations. This initiative is part of a regional energy realignment, considering the diversification of natural gas sources in the current geopolitical context.
