The 30-year-old man suspected of having killed his girlfriend, whose body was found in a suitcase thrown into the Olt River, turned himself in at a police station in St. Gallen, Switzerland. The Swiss SIRENE office informed the Romanian authorities of his appearance.
An arrest warrant in absentia had been issued for Gheorghe Vlăduț Bălțățeanu on Wednesday evening, for murder. The Vâlcea Tribunal ordered the measure after investigators established that the man was the main suspect in the case of the 28-year-old woman, originally from Dolj County.
The victim’s body was discovered on Tuesday by a fisherman in the area of the Ionești dam, Vâlcea County. The body was inside luggage floating on the surface of the water. The autopsy indicated that the woman had died violently, as a result of multiple traumatic injuries, with the death dated September 21, 2026.
During the search conducted at the suspect’s home in the commune of Tomșani, investigators found several reddish-brown stains on the mattress in the room used by him and the victim, which are presumed to be blood. Samples were collected to determine their nature and origin.
The investigation is being conducted by prosecutors from the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Vâlcea Tribunal together with police officers from Vâlcea and Sibiu. The authorities are to begin the procedures for bringing the man to Romania. He benefits from the presumption of innocence until a final ruling is handed down.
