Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu has rejected reports that Romania is set to relinquish or lose its veto power in the European Union. The reaction came during her participation in the Foreign Affairs Council, amid an internal political controversy over a letter signed by the foreign ministers of the member states.

Oana Țoiu accused AUR and other politicians of promoting false information. The minister explained that the document does not eliminate a member state’s ability to block a decision, but requires it to explain its reasons when invoking an essential national interest. According to her, the veto remains intact, and the explanation does not need to be approved by other states.

The head of Romania’s diplomacy said that any potential change to the decision-making mechanisms could not be made overnight. In the military field, giving up the veto would not be possible under the treaties, while in other areas it would require the unanimous agreement of European leaders and approval by national parliaments. “No such proposal exists,” the minister stated.

On the same day, the member states unanimously approved adding more than 1,500 individuals and entities to the EU sanctions list, which officials say support Russia in the war.
