President Nicușor Dan will present on Wednesday, at the UN Security Council, the immediate consequences of the war in Ukraine for the security of Romania and the region, State Counselor Vlad Ionescu said Tuesday in New York.
The address will take place during the debate “Maintaining Peace and Security in Ukraine,” scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Romania time, at the initiative of France, which holds the presidency of the Security Council this month.
According to Vlad Ionescu, the meeting will address the conflict’s effects on the international multilateral system, global stability and food security. Romania will also highlight the direct impact on itself, the Black Sea region and affected international partners.
The presidential adviser warned that Russia’s aggression threatens the global rules-based architecture. Moscow, a permanent member of the Security Council, will likely respond, although it is unclear at what level it will be represented.
Nicușor Dan will argue for the need for a just and lasting resolution to the conflict, respecting Ukraine’s territorial integrity and independence. Vlad Ionescu also mentioned the recent meeting requested by Romania following the drone incidents, attended by Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu. Bucharest’s position is that the way the war ends will affect the security of all Europe and Romania.
