President Nicușor Dan told Bloomberg that Russia appears more prepared to intensify the war in Ukraine than to end it, amid the increasing number of provocations attributed to the Kremlin on the territory of the European Union.
The Romanian head of state said that NATO member states had concluded that they needed to be better prepared to respond to these challenges while remaining calm. Nicușor Dan expressed hope that U.S. President Donald Trump would succeed in mediating a peace agreement, but believes that Russia is not currently ready for an accord.
In this context, Romania and the other member states of the European Union are trying to reduce tensions, but are also preparing for hybrid attacks by Moscow. The threats mentioned include drone incursions, cyberattacks, and disinformation campaigns.
“We want to remain calm and shoot down the drones that enter our territory and our territorial waters,” the president said.
This week, Nicușor Dan also gave interviews to News Nation, SiriusXM, and Newsmax. He also published an editorial in The Daily Signal, in which he argued that strengthening the American military presence in Romania would be beneficial for the United States.
