President Nicușor Dan stated, in an interview with the American network Newsmax, that he welcomes President Donald Trump’s diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine, but does not believe Russia is ready to negotiate a peace agreement. The statements were made in the context of meetings held separately by American envoy Steve Witkoff with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The Romanian head of state supported maintaining economic sanctions against Moscow, arguing that Russia’s economic difficulties justify preserving international pressure. Dan said that the involvement of the United States is important for regional security and the global economy.

The president agreed with Trump’s call for European NATO member states to assume greater responsibility for their own defense. He specified that Romania allocates approximately 2.5% of its GDP to defense and intends to increase this percentage.

Dan also spoke about the intensification of incursions by Russian drones near Romanian territory. According to the data presented on the program, Romania has recorded 35 such incidents since the beginning of the year, compared with nine in 2025. He said that the country has strengthened its response capabilities with the support of NATO allies.
