President Nicusor Dan warned on Sunday, on Army Day, that Russia’s war against Ukraine is creating unprecedented threats in the Black Sea, reaching Romania’s territorial waters and exclusive economic zone. The statement was made at the 86th Air Base in Borcea, amid several incidents in which commercial vessels were hit or damaged in the region.
The head of state said these developments endanger Romania’s security and freedom of navigation. He stated that the country would act together with its NATO allies and partners in the European Union to deter and, if necessary, neutralize threats along its borders.
In his speech, Nicusor Dan spoke about maintaining a robust defense budget, in line with Romania’s commitments within NATO, as well as modernizing and equipping the Romanian Army. The president underscored the army’s role in ensuring stability and said that Romania is protected by its Strategic Partnership with the United States and its membership in NATO.
The most recent incident mentioned occurred on October 23, when a vessel flying the flag of the Comoros Islands was struck by a drone near Romanian territorial waters. One person died, three were reported missing, and the vessel sank. On October 15, another vessel requested assistance after a fire broke out near Sulina.
