Nicușor Dan was invited by Donald Trump to participate in the first meeting of the Council for Peace, scheduled for February 19. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban also confirmed his participation in this event. The Council was initially proposed as part of a plan to end the conflict between Israel and Hamas and received a mandate from the UN Security Council. Although its purpose remains unclear, it is expected to address other global conflicts as well. Romania received an official invitation to become a member, but with a fee of one billion dollars.
Nicușor Dan stated that he is analyzing the implications of this invitation in relation to Romania's international commitments, mentioning that the decision-making process could take weeks or months due to the issues raised by the Council's Charter. Opponents of the project believe that Trump aims to create an alternative to the UN. The Council itself proposes to promote stability and peace in conflict-affected areas, and Trump will be its first president.
