President Nicușor Dan stated that any potential increase in the minimum wage must take into account the risks of non-competitiveness for certain economic activities.
He offered to mediate between social partners on this subject, considering that the European directive regarding the minimum wage is being challenged at the Court of Justice of the European Union, with a decision expected in November, during the preparation period for the state budget for 2026.
Nicușor Dan emphasized that, although there is a general desire to increase wages, a minimum wage that is too high could lead to job losses.
Within the coalition, the issue of increasing the minimum wage is controversial, being supported by social democrats, while the Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare, warned that such an increase could affect the competitiveness of the Romanian economy and create fiscal pressure on small businesses.
