Over 50 non-governmental organizations, including the Filia Center and ActiveWatch, are urging Parliament to expedite the adoption of a bill dedicated to preventing femicides. These NGOs emphasize the state's obligation to protect citizens and to intervene to prevent violence against women. This year, authorities have failed to ensure the safety of women, and many femicide cases had a known history of violence. The proposed bill recognizes femicide in Romanian legislation and includes measures such as data collection, risk assessment by authorities, gender equality education in schools, and the recognition of the seriousness of femicide acts in the Penal Code. It also proposes the removal of the prior complaint requirement for crimes of rape and sexual assault, as well as the intervention ex officio in cases of domestic violence.
