The Organization of Social Democratic Women (OFSD) has submitted to Parliament the bill that introduces for the first time the concept of femicide into Romanian legislation, defining the killing of a woman for gender-related reasons. PNL Deputy, Alina Gorghiu, the initiator of the project, emphasized its importance for women who have not had the opportunity to file a complaint and for those who have been silenced. The project recognizes that not all crimes are the same and imposes obligations on the police and prosecutors to collect data on cases of violence. The law will introduce harsher penalties for crimes committed out of a desire for control or dominance and will extend protection for former family members. It will also emphasize education for gender equality in schools. The project enjoys unprecedented support, with over 250 parliamentarians backing it, and aims to stop violence against women before it leads to murder. OFSD believes that this initiative is a historic step for protecting women's lives and promoting values of respect and equality in society.
