Organizations brought together in the Network for the Prevention and Combating of Violence Against Women are organizing marches in ten localities across the country to draw attention to domestic and gender-based violence and to call on authorities to take more effective protection measures.
Demonstrators say that 30 femicides have already been documented this year—crimes that, according to the organizers, could have been prevented if risks had been properly assessed and protection measures had been ordered and implemented in time. The message of the marches is one of solidarity with women and girls living in fear of violence.
In Bucharest and Brașov, the marches begin at 3:00 p.m., from University Square and the S. Chiriacescu Aula, respectively. In Timișoara, the protest is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in Victory Square, while in Cluj-Napoca it begins at 3:00 p.m. at the Memorandists Monument. Actions have also been announced in Baia Mare, Arad, Piatra Neamț, Târgu Mureș, Mizil and the commune of Valea Seacă in Bacău County.
The organizations are calling for the implementation of the Femicides Law, mandatory risk assessments by police officers, prosecutors and judges, more effective protection orders, and a national register of domestic violence cases. Other demands include education for gender equality, protection for children who lose a parent, and training for specialists who intervene in such cases.
