The Ministry of Justice, led by Radu Marinescu, has initiated a public consultation for a law that could punish murder for gender reasons with life imprisonment. This initiative comes in the wake of a tragic incident in which a 25-year-old woman was killed by her husband, in the presence of their child. The woman had a restraining order against the aggressor. The bill, submitted to Parliament on October 29, has received the support of 273 parliamentarians, thus becoming the most significant legislative initiative in the recent history of Romania.

Also, in the context of rising violence against women, over 3,000 people protested in the streets, and 18 embassies in Romania issued a joint statement for the prevention of gender-based violence. The bill aims to recognize femicide in Romanian legislation and includes measures for the prevention and combating of this phenomenon, such as the elimination of prior complaints in cases of rape and sexual assault. Non-governmental organizations have called for the urgent adoption of this bill to protect victims of domestic violence.
