In Romania, a woman is killed almost weekly, and in 2025, 51 femicides were reported. However, femicide is not defined as a crime in the Penal Code, Romania being among the few countries in the EU that do not have regulations in this regard. On November 13, the European Parliament called on the European Commission to recognize femicide as a distinct crime, highlighting the need for strengthened European legislation against gender-based violence. It is also requested that a definition of rape based on consent be established, to protect victims who cannot physically resist. The Parliament wants gender-based violence to be included on the list of European crimes, which would allow for the standardization of sanctions and cooperation procedures among member states. The adopted report does not change the legislation but establishes the official position of the Parliament, urging the Commission to act in the field of gender equality. Marko Vešligaj, responsible for the report, emphasized the importance of action for the safety and freedom of women in the EU.
