Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare will attend the meeting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) and the extended-format Eurogroup meeting in Brussels on Monday, November 9, 2026. Romania seeks to champion its interests in European tax negotiations, reduce administrative burdens, and accelerate the use of funds earmarked for investment and development.
Discussions within the Eurogroup will focus on financing the defense sector, the efficient use of public resources, and joint procurement. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is also expected to attend the meeting.
The ECOFIN agenda includes simplifying European legislation, assessing the impact of regulations on the economy, and reducing administrative obligations for companies. Ministers will also examine the tobacco taxation package, including the regulation of new tobacco and nicotine products.
Another topic concerns the application of the European economic governance framework and the progress of the implementation of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP). The Ministry of Finance says that progress in reducing the budget deficit supports Romania’s dialogue with European institutions. On the sidelines of the meetings, Nazare will meet with European Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra for talks on public finances and sustainable development.
