The mayor of Stănești commune in Giurgiu County, Dănuț Mitrea, and Deputy Mayor Costel Ghizdăreanu have been detained for 24 hours in a criminal case being investigated by officers from the Giurgiu Economic Crime Investigation Service. The two are being investigated for alleged abuse of office and embezzlement, with the inquiry focusing on stone purchases and the use of machinery belonging to a public institution.
According to the Giurgiu County Police Inspectorate, on November 2, officers executed three summons warrants. The investigation found that, between 2024 and 2025, two 56-year-old men allegedly made several stone purchases without complying with legal provisions and unlawfully used, for personal purposes, machinery belonging to an institution in Stănești commune.
Investigators estimate the damage at approximately 80,000 lei. Based on the evidence gathered, the two men were detained for 24 hours and are to be brought before the competent prosecutor’s office, with procedural proposals.
The case is connected to searches carried out in October 2025 at Stănești City Hall. At the time, authorities examined procurement contracts and expense settlements suspected of having been prepared on the basis of false documents. The investigation is continuing to establish the full circumstances and the responsibility of each person involved.
