The accountant of Mărgineni City Hall was detained after allegedly transferring 400,000 lei into her own account

The accountant of Mărgineni City Hall, Neamț County, was detained for 24 hours on Thursday after police established that she had allegedly illegally transferred approximately 400,000 lei from the institution’s funds into her own sole proprietorship account. The 35-year-old woman is being investigated for embezzlement and computer fraud.

The investigation was conducted by officers from the Neamț Criminal Investigations Service, under the prosecutor’s coordination, as part of the national “Jupiter” operation. Searches were carried out at the headquarters of a public institution and at the suspect’s home, where accounting documents, computer equipment and other evidence were seized.

According to investigators, the payments were recorded in documents as having been made to companies for services or purchases. In reality, the money allegedly ended up in the account of the sole proprietorship owned by the accountant. One of the companies listed in the documents had reportedly been dissolved since 2017.

The first suspicions arose at the beginning of spring, after Mayor Robert Mitrea noticed transactions to companies about which he had no information and notified the police. The woman had been hired by the city hall in August 2024. Investigations are continuing to establish the full extent of the criminal activity and recover the damages.
