Former Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu has confirmed that he will not marry his partner, Sorina Docuz, this month, following reports that the wedding had been called off. He made the statement to Digi24 amid controversy that emerged after the christening of Alfred Simonis’s son, held in Timișoara at the end of last week.
“We remain committed to one another, following the presidential model,” Ciolacu said. He is currently president of the Buzău County Council. His reaction came after G4Media reported that the event had allegedly been canceled amid public criticism of the expensive outfits worn by PSD leaders and their partners at the party.
Images from the christening sparked debate on social media, as social democrats frequently promote messages about austerity. The partners of several PSD leaders drew attention with extravagant outfits, handbags worth thousands of euros, and fur coats.
Among the controversies was the stole worn by Sorina Docuz, which the press estimated at €10,000–15,000. Ciolacu, however, said it had been purchased in Istanbul for €500. Questions also arose about the gift received at the christening, after Alfred Simonis’s wealth declarations indicated amounts of approximately €35,000 and €89,000 at similar previous events.
