Local police in Iași confiscated 9,147 lei found on a man accused of begging and causing a disturbance near the Metropolitan Cathedral. The incident took place in the morning, around 8:00 a.m., after pilgrims waiting in line alerted the authorities.
According to the local press and statements by a local police officer, the man was shouting against the city administration and the church. He reportedly became uncooperative when officers tried to speak with him and allegedly insulted them. He was later taken to the Local Police headquarters for checks.
The authorities claim that the man, who uses a wheelchair and had a leg amputated because of diabetes, has previously been caught begging in Iași. Police say he can move around on his own, has a registered residence and several cars registered in his name, including a Lexus.
During the checks, the man allegedly took a cross from his clothes and cursed the officers. Police also claim that he had previously begged alone, while more recently he was helped by another person to transport an audio system. The money was taken by the authorities for further investigation.
