The mayor of the city of Craiova, Olguța Vasilescu, announced a significant discovery made by the specialists of the Oltenia Museum during archaeological research at the Roman Fort of Răcari.
This discovery brings to light an important part of the region's history, dating back almost 1,800 years. Archaeologists have identified the stone foundation of the granary, a building essential for the Roman fortification, which housed the garrison's supplies, including grains and food. Olguța Vasilescu emphasized that the traces of the fire that destroyed this building provide new information about the end of the fortification, most likely during the Gothic invasions of the 3rd century.
The fort at Răcari is the second largest in the region, having a strategic role in monitoring the Jiu Valley. Research was resumed in 2003, with the support of the Dolj County Council.
